Founded in 2014 by designer and academic Timothy Andrews, Knit Works London bridges high-end fashion knitwear expertise with accessible materials and training for students, independent designers, and hobbyist machine knitters worldwide.

Unlike traditional yarn suppliers, where colour choice can be limited, Knit Works London provides an extensive, curated spectrum of luxury yarns sourced directly from the prestigious mills used by global fashion houses.

Handy Sample-Size Cones: Perfect for experimental swatches, colorwork, trims, or fashion school projects without buying multi-kilogram bulk quantities, but big cones are available too.

Wide & Vibrant Colour Palettes: Looking for a specific shade? Knit Works London has a vast range of rich, precise shades selected specifically to meet the high standards of fashion, textile, and design students and professionals.

Stock Service Colours: Most Knit Works London yarns are in stock service colours. This means you can reorder the same colour later if you like the samples you’ve made and want to knit full garments, or simply if you run out.

Direct from the top spinners, not ‘dead stock’ yarn: Other suppliers sell old ‘dead stock’ yarn left over from production in factories. This means colours are limited and sometimes drab, and it can be hard to find the same colour again. Whereas Knit Works London’s yarns are all fresh from the finest mills.

Luxury fashion yarns: These are yarns used by top fashion brands, such as Chanel, Burberry, McQueen, Victoria Beckham, JW Anderson, Ashish, Simone Rocha and Yeezy. With these yarns students can upgrade their projects and hobbyists can access the same quality.

Expert Machine Knitting Classes in London

We teach machine knitting in small group in-person classes in our vibrant east London studio, as well as multi-day courses. Online video courses are launching soon.

Our classes are led by founder Timothy Andrews, bringing over two decades of high-level industry and academic expertise to every session.

Education: BA in Textiles from Chelsea College of Art; MA in Womenswear Knitwear from the Royal College of Art; PGCert in Creative Education from University of the Arts London.  

Industry Experience: Former knitwear designer for luxury fashion brands including Burberry. Designer-maker of knitwear for luxury fashion brands including McQueen, Craig Green and Preen. Founder of his own label Timothy James Andrews, whose designs were featured in a 15-page British Vogue editorial shot by Mario Testino, and also appeared in iD, Dazed & Confused, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, French Vogue and Volt. Worn by icons including Björk, Alice Dellal, Carmen Kass and Jody Harsh. Private commissions for Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes), Florence and the Machine and Ebony Bones.

Academic Teaching: Lecturer, tutor and technician at world-leading design institutions including Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, and Chelsea College of Art.

As a professional educator and professional designer, our classes are expertly designed to equip students with the skills they need to succeed at machine knitting.

The classes are structured to build up students’ skills from beginners, intermediate techniques, and advanced-level skills.

Studio Knitting Machine Hire & Resources

Knit Works London supports the knitwear community with professional infrastructure and educational resources:

Studio Equipment Hire: Studio access to domestic and industrial knitting machines for designers, students, and makers. Brother KH881 standard-gauge domestic knitting machines, and Brother KH260 chunky gauge domestic knitting machines, with ribber attachments and specialist carriages, are available to hire. Dubied industrial knitting machines in gauges 2.5gg, 7gg, 8gg, 10gg and 12gg are also available to hire in our well-equipped studio.

Our machines are popular with university students of fashion and textiles, design studios for developing techniques and testing yarns, and independent designers and hobbyists.
